Yoga Class Video:
Finding Space in your Hips – Yoga for Tight Hips

When did you last think about your hips? Probably not while you were climbing the stairs, getting out of the car or carrying a new tree up the garden for planting. Most of the time you only notice them when they feel stiff, stuck or sore.

Tight hips come up again and again in my classes, and when people look for yoga for tight hips, instinct often says stretch them. But tightness is often your body protecting joints that aren’t moving freely or aren’t well supported, and pulling harder rarely changes that. Hips feel most spacious when the pelvis and legs can move independently, and when the muscles around them are strong enough to support you.

This class invites your pelvis and legs to rediscover movement they may have forgotten, then builds the strength and control that help them keep it. Freedom and stability, working together, are what create real space.

We begin lying down, with small, quiet movements that remind a stiff pelvis it can move. Then we build gradually, noticing how your pelvis and legs take turns to lead. You’ll also find out which side of your body has a mind of its own – which side you can learn from, and which side might need more time to find ease.

.

Benefits:

Through slow, curious movement and targeted strength work, you’ll:

  • Release tightness around your hips, pelvis and lower back
  • Find a longer, freer stride, with your legs swinging easily from your hips (channelling your inner Marilyn Monroe)
  • Ease stiffness around your sacrum and SI joints, where hips and lower back meet
  • Build strength in the muscles that keep your hips steady and supported
  • Feel more confident on rocky paths, steep steps and one leg
  • Bend and lift from your hips, whether you’re digging the veg patch or hauling your case off the carousel, so your back doesn’t take the strain
  • Leave feeling lighter, more grounded and at home in your body

.

Who Is It For :

  • Anyone whose hips feel stiff after desk days, long drives or a weekend of digging
  • Walkers, hikers, gardeners and travellers who want to keep moving with ease
  • Anyone who has stretched their hips for years without feeling much different
  • People with a niggly sacrum or lower back who want to move it kindly
  • Yoga practitioners and teachers looking for a fresh approach to yoga for tight hips, beyond simply stretching them

.

What to Expect:

  • Slow, curious movement which begins lying down, gradually moving to standing
  • Some strength work you’ll feel in your legs and glutes, balanced with plenty of ease
  • Balance work that you can keep small or take further
  • Moments of humour, and the odd surprise about which side of your body has a mind of its own

“After over ten years you still have something quite new to share – the hip rotation exercises. Amazing!”
– Michael

Everything is offered as an exploration, not a test. If a movement feels glitchy or one side is harder, that is simply useful information. There are options for sensitive knees and wrists throughout.

.

Why You’ll Want This Class:

This hour gives your hips what they rarely get: attention, freedom to move, and just enough strength work to make everyday movement feel easier and more secure. Many people notice the difference as soon as they stand up and walk around the room. Once you’ve downloaded it, you can return to it whenever your hips start to feel stiff, stuck or neglected.

.

Recommended Props for this yoga class:

  • sturdy chair for support
  • two foam blocks (or a thick, stable book to stand on),
  • foam roller if you have one (otherwise a sock on a smooth floor works),
  • a blanket to pad your knees, and whatever you like for Savasana.

  • Workshop Video: Pelvic Balance – If this class leaves you curious, this workshop goes deeper. It explores why not all hips need opening, how your sacroiliac joints are affected, and why tucking your tailbone may or may not help.
  • Strength Class 2: Abdominals & Hips/Glutes – This is the natural next step if you enjoyed the hip hitches and split-stance squat. With a resistance loop band and careful attention to form, you’ll build strength and stability around your hips and core.
  • Workshop Video: Legs and their Connection to our Sense of Self – Here you’ll look at the strong muscles of your legs and hips from a different angle, including how they shape the way you stand, move and feel grounded.
