Movement Foundations 1: Abdominals
Learn the technique. Build the foundation. Move with strength.
Do you ever find that abdominal exercises leave your lower back feeling uncomfortable, your neck feeling sore or even give you a headache? Or perhaps you’ve noticed your abdomen doming during certain movements and wondered why?
The first in our Movement Foundations series, this technique-focused session teaches you how to use your abdominal muscles effectively and appropriately, so you can build strength without losing control.
Drawing on Pilates and functional movement principles, we’ll explore how your breathing – and the position of your ribs, pelvis and spine  – influence the way your abdominals work. You’ll learn what you’re looking for, what good technique feels like, and how to adapt an exercise when you’re reaching the edge of your control – rather than simply pushing harder.
We’ll work through a range of exercises and progressions, developing your ability to coordinate your breath, torso and limbs while maintaining strong, well-controlled form. The aim isn’t to create a particular shape or appearance, but to help you develop strength, stability and confidence in all your movements.
This is an opportunity to slow down, understand what’s happening in your body and develop techniques which will support you in both your strength sessions and throughout your everyday movement.
.
Come back to this session whenever you want to refresh your technique, check your form or build greater confidence with core work.
.
This is specially useful if:
- Your lower back tends to feel uncomfortable during core work
- Your neck gets tired or sore – or you find yourself pulling on your head – during abdominal exercises
- You notice your abdomen doming as an exercise gets harder and want to understand how to work with more control
- You’re new to strength training or simply want to refine your technique and understand your core more clearly
- You’re unsure whether you’re using your abdominals effectively
- You want to develop stronger, more responsive abdominal support
- You want to feel more confident about your technique when doing core exercises
.
You’ll learn to :
- coordinate your breath, ribs, pelvis and spine
- find the level of abdominal engagement that’s appropriate for the movement
- recognise when you’ve reached the edge of your control and adapt the exercise
- progress exercises without simply adding more effort
- carry that understanding into your other strength sessions and everyday movement
.
