Notting Hill yoga classes every Friday morning with Catherine Annis at one of the best yoga centres in London – The Life Centre.

 

The style of yoga Catherine teaches has been inspired by the pioneering approach of Vanda Scaravelli. This is a gentle yet demanding form of Hatha yoga, which focuses on developing core strength through releasing tension and creating length in the spine.

Scaravelli inspired yoga is a stress-free yoga that benefits everyone.  Classes are suitable for all ages and all levels, from beginners to those with many years of experience.  Regardless of your level of fitness, you will discover a longer, stronger and more flexible spine, a calmer mind, and begin to enjoy increased energy and ease of movement.

It uses the breath and gravity to allow the spine to unfold like a wave, allowing the uninhibited opening and energising of the whole body. As Vanda explains in the opening page of her book “Awakening the Spine”:

Getting to The Life Centre

Tube

Edge Street is a turning off the northern end of Kensington Church Street close to its junction with Notting Hill Gate. The nearest tube stations are Notting Hill Gate (Central, District or Circle lines) which is 3 minutes’ walk, or High Street Kensington (District and Circle lines) which is 10 minutes’ walk.

Please check Transport for London for up to the minute travel information.

From Notting Hill Gate – Central, District or Circle lines:

∗  After the ticket barriers turn left and left again, taking the Kensington Church Street exit.

∗  Walk ahead until you reach Kensington Church Street (Waterstones bookshop will be on your right).

∗  Turn right into Kensington Church Street.

∗  Take the second right into Edge Street.

∗  The Life Centre is a white fronted building on the left hand side, halfway up Edge Street.

From High Street Kensington – District and Circle lines:

∗  On exiting the tube station go straight ahead through the arcade of shops until you reach Kensington High Street.

∗  Turn right and cross the road.

∗  Take the first left onto Kensington Church Street and keep walking for approximately 7 minutes.

∗  Edge Street will be on your left.

∗  The Life Centre is a white fronted building on the left hand side, halfway up Edge Street.

Bus

The Life Centre is served by bus routes 27, 28, 52, 70, 148, 328 and 452, all of which go to Kensington Church Street. In addition, bus routes 31, 94, 148 and 390 all go to Notting Hill Gate.

Parking

There are Pay & Display bays on Edge Street. They operate Monday to Friday from 08:30 to 18:30 and Saturday from 08:30 to 13:30, costing £3 per hour. On Sunday and Bank Holidays there parking is free. Please note that Residents Only parking bays in Edge Street operate until late in the evening.

Maximum stay in Edge Street is 2 hours. There are some 4-hour spaces in the roads between Edge Street and Notting Hill Gate, and in the roads off Kensington Church Street on the opposite side to Edge Street.

Motorcycle

Available on Kensington Place (parallel to Edge Street).

Bicycle

There is a bicycle rack on Edge Street right outside The Life Centre (please note that The Life Centre cannot accept responsibility for any loss of, or damage to, bicycles).

About Catherine

Catherine Annis is a member of the yoga teacher training faculty at triyoga, London's leading yoga studio where she also sits on the teacher advisory committee.  She is well known for her imaginative and practical approach to yoga. In 2017 she created the Intelligent Yoga Teacher Training Course (iytt), an 18 month, anatomically focused teacher training course with world-leading teachers Peter Blackaby and Gary Carter.

Originally a professional dancer, she discovered yoga as a teenager, and has been  practicing since the mid 1970s.  Having studied various styles of yoga including Sivananda, Iyengar, Astanga and various forms of Hatha yoga, she eventually gravitated to the teachings of Vanda Scaravelli.

Catherine’s daily yoga practice and  teaching focuses on deepening physical awareness and  alignment to reveal and release the natural freedom of the body, particularly the spine.  She holds a Masters degree in ballet studies, and is a qualified Thai massage  practitioner, and it is this interest in the body which informs and inspires her teaching.
